Regulatory substances produced in organisms and transported throughout the body to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action. Though hormones regulate digestion, respiration, sleep, and many other bodily functions, the term is most commonly used by the general public to describe the "sex hormones," or the hormones involved in puberty and sexual development, reproduction, and sexual desire.
